Error 3 means the actual mist volume was significantly greater than the target volume, most often due to a leak in the nozzle circuit. Before assuming a leak, first confirm the controller’s setup values are correct, ensure that the circuit lines are full, then size the leak by running multiple misting cycles.
1. Note the AFR before doing any more testing.
Record the AFR (Average Flow Rate) in the DATA menu that was present when Error 3 occurred as you’ll need this baseline for multiple comparisons later.
2. Check the nozzle count (NOZ).
Confirm the NOZ value in the SETUP menu matches the actual number of nozzles installed on the circuit. A mismatch here alone can trigger a false Error 3.
3. Check the nozzle flow rate (NFR).
Confirm NFR in the DATA menu is reasonable; it should fall between 35–50 mL/min (default is 40 mL/min.)
- Note: Hago/4023/Steinen nozzles will run around 55-60 mL/min
4. Check the tolerance (TOL).
Confirm TOL in the DATA menu matches the nozzle count: 75% for fewer than 30 nozzles, 50% for 30–50 nozzles, 25% for more than 50 nozzles.
5. Size the leak.
Clear the error, then run an INS cycle (Maintenance -> INS) for about thirty seconds to ensure the lines are full. Then run a Manual Mist (Up + Down Arrow). After running these cycles, check the AFR again.
6. Branch based on AFR:
-
- If AFR > 55, proceed to Troubleshooting Err 3: Locating a Large Leak (AFR > 55)
- If AFR < 55, proceed to Troubleshooting Err 3: Diagnosing a Slow (Line-Fill) Leak (AFR < 55)
