If you see one of these three icons in the app indicating the iMist3 is not connected to the cell network, follow these steps to troubleshoot the problem.

Troubleshooting:

iMist3 Troubleshooting is done using the LED on the module to diagnose various problems with the module. If the module is up to date on the latest firmware: Version 149 (9/26), it will have access to the following blinking light patterns for troubleshooting. An iMist3 module needs at least version 140 to see basic LED patterns.

Additionally, when an iMist3 module disconnects for any reason, it uses the remaining power in the capacitor to write a specific time to C20 within the cycles menu. This can additionally be used to diagnose the issue, however it is less reliable as it is not always written. These will be covered below with the blinking LED patterns.

Dead Module:

Remove power from the controller. Wait a full minute or until the green LED on the module goes dark. Restore power and observe the LED. If the LED is dark, the iMist3 module must be replaced. Please call MistAway Tech Support to organize replacement.

Searching for Tower:

If the LED is still blinking rapidly ten seconds after you restore power, it is attempting to connect to a cell tower.

Dead Capacitor:

If the LED shows a pattern of a few rapid flashes followed by a 4-5 sec pause, a capacitor in the module has failed and the iMist3 must be replaced. Please call MistAway Tech Support to organize replacement.

Failed Modem:

If the LED shows a completely solid light and does not do any blinking pattern whatsoever, the modem in the module has failed and the iMist3 must be replaced. Please call MistAway Tech Support to organize replacement.

C20 Time: 12:03

Communication Problems:

If after the module is rapidly blinking, it changes to a series of triple blinks with a brief pause between the sets, the module has failed to connect to the tower. This could be due to a number of things, mainly bad connectivity from the antenna, denial of registration by the tower operator, or a tower connection failure by the cellular provider. In this case, nothing is mechanically wrong with the iMist3 module, and it should be left plugged in as it continues to search for a signal.

C20 Times: 1:39 (CSQ), 12:02 (REG), 12:04 (TCP)

SIM Disconnected:

If the LED blinks rapidly for a few seconds and then displays a repeating pattern of two blinks followed by a short pause, you can may be able to restore connectivity by repositioning the SIM card inside the iMist3. See the related article for instructions on this process.

C20 Time: 12:01

Connected to Tower:

Allow about three minutes for the module to connect. If the LED pattern shifts from blinking rapidly to blinking slowly, the iMist3 module has connected to the cell network and will show to be online in the app. You may need to refresh the app screen by pulling down.

If the LED continues to blink rapidly, it has not reconnected to the cell network. Please call MistAway Tech Support for further instructions.

The iMist gateway is connected to the internet but it is not communicating with the node on the misting unit.

Potential Cause:

The gateway has lost the ID of the node on the misting unit.

The gateway or node has failed.

Troubleshooting:

To confirm the issue, open the Connection tab for the unit on iMistAway.com.

You’ll see that the Gateway Connection Status will indicate that it is online with a date stamp showing the current day and time. The Current Signal Strength will be Excellent, Good or Marginal but the date stamp will show a day and time in the past.

The iMist gateway is connected to the internet but it is not communicating with the node on the misting unit.

Potential Cause:

The misting unit has lost power.

The wireless connection to the gateway is intermittent due to poor range.

The node on the misting unit has failed.

Troubleshooting:

Look at the Signal Strength chart on the Connection tab for the unit on iMistAway.com.

A unit with a good signal strength should looks like this, with the signal strength, represented by the blue line has historically been in the white/Good Signal band.

Power loss to the misting unit is suggested if the signal strength abruptly drops into the red/”Not Connected band. Either the GFCI tripped or someone unplugged the unit.

A range problem – with intermittent connection – is suggested if the signal strength frequently oscillates between the yellow/”Marginal Signal” band chart and the red/”Disconnected” band. Unless the gateway or the misting unit are relocated, this problem will persist.

Solution:

If the chart suggests power loss, contact your customer and ask them to confirm that the misting unit has power. (The controller display will be backlit.)

If the chart suggests a range problem, you may be able to resolve it by relocating the gateway to a more elevated position in the house or by connecting the gateway to a wifi extension that is added somewhere in the house nearer to the misting unit.

Potential Cause:

Internet service to your customer’s house is temporarily out.

The gateway has lost power.

The gateway has been disconnected from your customer’s router or the physical port on the router or switch has failed.

Your customer’s router is configured to block software Port 1883 or the iMist server is down.

The gateway has failed or the ethernet cable connecting the gateway to the router has failed.

Troubleshooting:

If the gateway has recently gone offline, check again tomorrow. Your customer’s internet may be temporarily out.

If it has been off a few days, contact your customer and ask them to confirm that their internet is working.

If they report that the internet is working, it is likely that the gateway has either lost power or has been disconnected from their router. Ask them to confirm.

It is also possible that they have changed out their router and the new port forwarding or security settings have blocked communication. Ask them to confirm status:

For an iMist2 Gateway, any of the lights confirm power. If there is no blue light, there is no internet connection. If there is a blue light, but no green light, then port 1883 on the customer’s router is blocked.

The iMist gateway is connected to the internet but it is not communicating with the node on the misting unit.

Potential Cause:

The node’s processor has locked up or gotten “stuck”

The gateway or node has failed.

Solution:

You or your customer will need to perform the following steps to reboot the iMist2 gateway:

In the “Connection Tab” on iMistAway.com or on the iMistAway mobile app, click on the blue “Reboot” button that is circled in the image above.

The unit status circle at the top of the screen will turn black (“Gateway Not Connected”) for 2-3 minutes, indicating that the gateway is rebooting.

Once the gateway comes back online, observe the unit status circle at the top of the screen to confirm that the unit and gateway were able to reconnect.

If the unit status circle updates to a Green (ok), Blue (no recent mist), Yellow (warning), or Red (error) color, then the misting unit and gateway have reconnected.

If the unit status circle updates to Gray and “Unit Not Connected: Node Not Responsive” is still displayed at the top of the screen, then the misting unit and gateway have still not reconnected and the node on the unit will need to be rebooted.

To reboot the node on the unit, perform the following steps on the controller for the misting unit:

Ensure that the node is plugged into the back of the controller.

Power cycle the misting unit by unplugging the power cable from the home’s outlet. After plugging the power cable back in, observe the display on the controller as it goes through the following boot up procedure:

“Mist” -> “Away” -> “Gen 1.3” or “Gen 3P” -> “PR ###” -> ~ 10 sec pause -> *iMist2 Node Check*

It is critical that you confirm that the controller displays “IM2 On” during the iMist Node Check. If “IM OFF” is displayed instead, the node on the unit has failed and must be replaced.

After the unit has been successfully power cycled, wait 5-10 minutes and check the status of the unit on your iMistAway app.

If the unit status circle updates to a Green (ok), Blue (no recent mist), Yellow (warning), or Red (error) color, then the misting unit and gateway have reconnected.

If the unit status circle updates to Gray and “Unit Not Connected: Node Not Responsive” is still displayed at the top of the screen, then the misting unit and gateway have still not reconnected. The node on the unit has failed and will need to be replaced.
